Why aluminum-free deodorant gets a bad reputation

If you've tried natural deodorant before and gone back to conventional, you're not alone. Most aluminum-free formulas fail in one of three ways: they stop working by noon, they cause skin irritation from baking soda, or they transfer white residue onto clothing.

We spent a lot of time understanding why, and building a formula that addresses each one.

The baking soda problem

Most natural deodorants rely on baking soda as their main odor neutralizer. Baking soda works by raising pH to inhibit odor-causing bacteria. It's effective, but it's also highly alkaline, and skin's natural pH is slightly acidic (4.5-5.5). Regular baking soda use in the armpit area causes irritation, redness, and a rash in roughly 30% of people who try it.

Bared uses magnesium hydroxide instead. Same mechanism (raises pH, neutralizes odor), but at a gentler pH level that doesn't disrupt the skin barrier. The result: full-day odor protection without the irritation.

The moisture problem

Aluminum-based antiperspirants block sweat glands entirely. Natural deodorants don't, which means you'll still sweat. The goal isn't to eliminate sweat (that's a normal body function); it's to prevent the odor that follows.

To manage moisture without aluminum, we use arrowroot powder: a finely milled starch that absorbs surface moisture and improves the texture of the formula. It's not a sweat blocker, but it keeps you feeling dry throughout the day.

The efficacy problem

A lot of natural deodorants have an adjustment period where conventional-deodorant users experience more odor than usual for the first week or two. This is real, it's your body recalibrating after years of sweat suppression. We recommend giving any aluminum-free switch four weeks before judging it.

After the adjustment period, most people find that natural deodorant works as well as conventional, with ingredients they can actually read.
